misc

1. Sorry I wasn't one of the 8 million protesting for "no kings" on Saturday, but standing around for hours in the sun is no longer in my repertoire. My heart, and more importantly my vote, is with you.

2. Went to see Sullivan's last operetta, The Emerald Isle (yes it's set in Ireland). Not sure why; I'd seen it before. Very sketchy production: no sets, formal dress for costumes. Couldn't make out most of the words, sung or spoken, and the supertitles were nearly invisible.

3. The Lord of the Rings: toughest quiz ever. It's by John Garth, who knows his Tolkien better than almost anyone else active today. I got 25 out of 30, not including the one I would have gotten if I hadn't had a mental glitch, but it does include one that I don't think anyone would get unless they'd already independently noticed this (I had). Some pretty knowledgeable people got as low as 14, so don't feel bad.

  1. Ugh. 29 out of 30 and kicking myself for my "stumble at the end of the road," to borrow a phrase that Gandalf uses halfway through the book.

  2. I am curious as to what number question you're thinking of, with your comment about not getting it unless one had already independently noticed this?

I managed to get nos. 3 and 18 wrong (though I did not make the mistake of answering per the Jackson films), and then I messed up no. 29 by not stopping to think (the last one irks me a bit, I admit. The first two, I pondered and wavered between the right answer and an erroneous and finally choosing the erroneous, which I can accept without blaming myself for being sloppy).

    1. I did get right all three of those you mention. I've misplaced my answer sheet, but I remember missing 2, 5, and 19, all of which involve phrasing I'd forgotten. The one I think you'd have to have independently noticed was no. 17.

  3. Thank you for clarifying 🙂

Remembering some things about the history of the composition of the book also helped me be sure of no. 17.
